Your health data belongs to you. Here's exactly how Flare handles it.
Last updated: March 26, 2026 ยท Effective: March 26, 2026
The short version: All your pain data is stored locally on your iPhone. We do not collect, sell, or transmit your personal health information to any server. No account is required. You are in complete control.
Flare ("we," "our," or "us") is a mobile application for iOS that helps individuals track chronic pain. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the Flare app.
By using Flare, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you have questions, contact us at akhaneva.co@gmail.com.
Flare is designed as a privacy-first, on-device application. The following describes all data used by the app:
When you log pain, Flare stores the following data locally using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly use the Export or iCloud Sync features (Pro).
| Data Field | Purpose | Stored Where |
|---|---|---|
| Body region tapped | Identify pain location | On-device only |
| Pain type(s) | Describe pain quality | On-device only |
| Severity (1โ10) | Quantify pain intensity | On-device only |
| Optional notes | Free-text context | On-device only |
| Timestamp | Time/date of entry | On-device only |
During first launch, you select a body type (male/female silhouette for the body map) and age range. These preferences are stored locally using Apple's @AppStorage (UserDefaults) on your device only.
If you opt in to daily reminders, we use Apple's local notification system. No notification data is sent to external servers.
Flare does not use any third-party analytics SDKs (e.g., Firebase, Mixpanel, Amplitude) in the free version. We do not track your usage behavior, session length, or in-app actions.
If you enable iCloud Sync (a Pro feature), your pain entries are backed up and synchronized across your Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit infrastructure. This data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to your iCloud data.
The Export for Doctor feature generates a PDF file entirely on your device. You share this PDF using iOS's standard share sheet (AirDrop, email, etc.). Flare does not transmit this PDF anywhere โ all sharing is initiated by you through Apple's system frameworks.
Flare Pro includes an optional AI-powered correlation feature that sends anonymized, aggregated pain statistics โ weekly averages of severity, pain types, regions, and time patterns โ to Anthropic's Claude API for pattern analysis.
This feature:
You will be presented with an explicit consent prompt before this feature is enabled. See our verbatim disclosure: "Anonymized pain statistics (weekly averages of severity, sleep, and steps) may be processed by Anthropic's Claude API to generate insights. No raw health data or personal identifiers are transmitted. You can disable this feature at any time in Settings."
Flare Pro optionally reads step count and sleep data from Apple HealthKit to show correlations with your pain patterns. HealthKit data:
Flare supports users of all ages including those under 18, as chronic pain affects people of all ages. Users who indicate they are under 18 during onboarding are not subjected to any data collection beyond what is described in Section 2. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review this policy with their children.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at akhaneva.co@gmail.com.
Since all your data is stored on your device, you have full control:
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), UK, or California, you may have additional rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, or CCPA. Because we do not collect personal data on our servers, these rights are primarily exercised directly on your device. Contact us at akhaneva.co@gmail.com for any questions.
Your data is protected by iOS device security, including device passcode, Face ID / Touch ID, and Apple's on-device encryption. We recommend keeping your iOS software up to date and enabling device lock to protect your health data.
Pain entries are stored on your device for as long as you use the app. Deleting the Flare app removes all locally stored data. If you use iCloud Sync, data persists in your iCloud account until you delete it there as well.

We do not use any advertising networks, social media SDKs, or behavioral tracking libraries.
We may update this policy as Flare adds new features. We will notify you of material changes via an in-app notice or App Store update notes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the current version.
Flare is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The app is intended solely for personal tracking and informational purposes.
